Chapel Hollow, Tennessee

Historic Location of "Cutter Gap" from
Catherine Marshall's beloved book, Christy

Travel back in time and visit the historic Ebenezer Mission, the original mission site from Catherine Marshall's Christy, located in Chapel Hollow, Tennessee. Visitors can stop at Ebenezer Church which was reconstructed from the original church/schoolhouse and still has the original bell. At the mission property, visitors can see the foundation of the Mission House and the locations where other mission buildings once stood. Two buildings still stand dating from the time of Christy; the "O'Teale" cabin and another cabin which was probably a barter store at that time. Later, this cabin became the home of Flora and Arthur Corn ("Fairlight and Jeb Spencer"), then their daughter's, Opal Corn Myers, who was an inspiration to the mountain community. She became a teacher herself, preserved the mission property and became a friend of Catherine Marshall, advising her on her well-loved book, Christy.

Presently, the cabin is the home of Larry Myers, Opal's son, who is the manager of the historic site and carries on her spirit of hospitality. For additional information, you can contact Larry Myers at (423) 487-2648.

Directions to Chapel Hollow:
Take Interstate 40 to Exit 324, to Route 321 North to Newport. Take Highway 25-70 South toward Del Rio for approximately 12 miles. At the intersection of Highway 107 West, turn right. On the SW corner of this intersection is the Del Rio Post Office. Watch for Christy signs along the way. After you cross the French Broad River you will see the boarding house and the store on the left. Just before you cross the railroad tracks, you will see a red flag which marks the location of the depot where Christy got off the train from Asheville. Continue on the road for about one half of a mile until you come to the intersection for Old Fifteenth (an historical sign for John Lloyd Arrowood marks this spot as well as the road sign). Turn right and follow the dirt road about 4 miles back to the mission site. This is a narrow winding road with space for only one car most of the way, so drive slowly and watch for oncoming vehicles. About 3 miles in, watch for signs for Ebenezer Church. At the church sign, take the branch in the road to the left and see the church/schoolhouse; take the branch to the right and follow the Chapel Hollow signs to the mission property.
